City or county matters
Leicester City Council's Warm Homes funding is open; Leicestershire County Council's scheme, covering Oadby and Birstall, is paused.
-
Three planning councils
Leicester City, Oadby & Wigston and Charnwood each handle their own areas.
-
Terraces and semis
most homes in our area guides are red-brick terraces or interwar semis, both well suited to heat pumps.

Leicester's housing tells the story of its growth: Victorian villas in Stoneygate, dense terraces around Clarendon Park, interwar semis in Knighton and Western Park, post-war estates in Evington, and village cores in Aylestone and Birstall. Oadby and Birstall sit outside the city council's area, which affects both planning and funding.
Each guide explains what that means for a heat pump — from the noise test in a narrow back yard to conservation-area rules and possible off-gas homes on the city's edge.
Stoneygate
South of the city centre along the A6, LE2. Leicester's best-surviving Victorian suburb — substantial detached villas, 13+ individually listed buildings, and the 1978-designated Stoneygate Conservation Area covering 93 hectares. Heritage-aware retrofit territory.
Heat pump advice for Stoneygate →Knighton
Inner south, LE2. Predominantly 1930s–1940s red-brick semi-detached construction with a medieval village core at St Mary Magdalen Church. No conservation area = standard PD on most properties; routine retrofit conditions.
Heat pump advice for Knighton →Clarendon Park
Inner south-west, LE2. Dense 1880s–1890s Victorian terraces — parts of the area sit inside the Stoneygate CA boundary. University of Leicester proximity creates a substantial student-let and HMO tenure mix alongside owner-occupied stock.
Heat pump advice for Clarendon Park →Evington
Eastern Leicester, LE5. Three distinct residential areas: village core (pre-1920, inside the 1989 CA), Rowlatts Hill estate (1964–67), and Goodwood estate (1950s council-built). Mixed retrofit profiles by sub-area; possible off-grid pockets.
Heat pump advice for Evington →Oadby
South-east of Leicester city, LE2 — in Oadby & Wigston Borough Council jurisdiction (not LCC). Historic Danish-name settlement, affluent suburb, two confirmed Conservation Areas (Oadby Court + Hill Top & Meadowcourt). Edwardian to modern stock.
Heat pump advice for Oadby →Western Park
Western Leicester, LE3. Generally-affluent mixed-era suburb bordering Leicester's largest public park (178 acres). No conservation area — confirmed absent from LCC's register — meaning simpler PD rights than the city's heritage neighbourhoods.
Heat pump advice for Western Park →Birstall
Northern periphery, LE4 — in Charnwood Borough Council jurisdiction (not LCC). The largest village in Charnwood (14,313 residents, 2021), with the 1984-designated Birstall Conservation Area centred on St James the Great church. Great Central Railway 1899 expansion drove growth.
Heat pump advice for Birstall →Aylestone
South-western Leicester, LE2 with LE8 fringe. Anglo-Saxon settlement with three significant listed-building heritage assets — Grade II* St Andrew's Church (13th C), Aylestone Hall (1339 timber), Packhorse Bridge (Grade II* + Scheduled Monument). Aylestone Meadows LNR borders the area.
