Heat Pump Maintenance in Leicester
Looking after a heat pump is mostly common sense plus a yearly service. This page explains what to do yourself, what needs an engineer, and how to decide whether a maintenance plan makes sense for your Leicester home.

Five-minute checks
pressure, error codes and a clear outdoor unit cover most owner maintenance.
-
Annual service
keeps efficiency up and meets most warranty conditions.
-
Plans vary
some are good value, some aren't; it depends on what's promised in writing.
Monthly checks for owners
-
Outdoor unit clear?
In a Leicester back yard it's easy for bins, bikes or garden furniture to end up against the unit. Keep at least 30 cm clear around it, and remove leaves and snow (with the power off at the isolator).
-
Pressure normal?
Check the gauge near the cylinder against the reading you were given at handover. A steady drop means a leak or air in the system.
-
Any error codes?
Write them down with the date. They help an engineer diagnose quickly.
-
Hot water as usual?
Slower reheating can mean scale on the cylinder coil. Severn Trent's water in Leicester is hard.
-
Heating steady?
Leave it running at a consistent temperature. Heat pumps are least efficient when switched off and on.
What an engineer should handle
- the yearly service (see our servicing page)
- anything inside the outdoor unit or controller
- refrigerant work, which needs F-Gas certification
- a system that keeps losing pressure
- descaling a cylinder coil
Maintenance plans in plain terms
A maintenance plan is a regular payment, often monthly, that covers the annual service and sometimes repairs or priority call-outs. Typical plans cost around £150–£350 a year.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the annual service included? | It should be; it's the main thing you're paying for. |
| Are parts included, and up to what value? | Many plans cover labour but not parts. |
| Is there a guaranteed response time? | Only count on it if it's written into the plan. |
| Can I cancel? | Check notice periods and any minimum term. |
| Does it cover the cylinder? | Some plans cover the heat pump only. |
For a newer system under manufacturer warranty, paying per service (typically £120–£250) is often cheaper. For landlords and older systems, a good plan can be worth it.
Help for lower-income households
If your household income is under £36,000 and your home is rated EPC D to G, check Leicester City Council's Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund low-carbon heating and insulation. If your heat pump came through the scheme, check its paperwork for any aftercare included.
Maintenance questions answered
How much maintenance does a heat pump need?
Very little day to day: keep it clear, glance at the pressure and error codes, and have it serviced once a year.
Is a maintenance plan required for the warranty?
Usually not. An annual service by a qualified engineer is what warranties typically ask for.
Can I hose the outdoor unit down?
A gentle rinse with the power off is fine. Never use a pressure washer, and avoid bending the fins.
What if I rent my home?
Your landlord is responsible for maintaining the heating. Keep the unit clear and report problems promptly.
How long will my heat pump last?
Typically 15–20 years with regular servicing.
